Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated the importance of close relationships when a romantic partner is diagnosed with cancer (Devine, Parker, Fouladi, & Cohen, 2003). Although prior research has examined how attachment style influences medical caregiving (e.g., Kunce & Shaver, 1994), no study has yet examined how attachment style influences medical decision-making. Therefore, the present study examined whether attachment style influences preferences for different types of cancer treatments, specifically those that prolong life expectancy at the expensive of quality of life (QOL). After completing the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR; Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) to determine their attachment style, 101 students at Texas Christian University rated the extent to which they would advise their partner to undergo different cancer treatments. Results demonstrated that females who scored high on attachment anxiety demonstrated a greater preference for treatment options that carried better quality of life and lower caregiver burden.
