Abstract
Countless variables influence the trajectory of an ensemble's preparation period making it impossible to identify a single method or approach. This research describes three university conductors' approaches to preparation of repertoire and planning by: outlining their sequential processes and timelines; examining the structure and tools inherent to the implementation of their respective processes; and identifying the priorities or "non-negotiable" factors that guide the decision-making models of each subject. Subjects include James Rodde of Iowa State University, Z. Randall Stroope of Oklahoma State University, and Betsy Cook Weber of the University of Houston. Subjects were selected from a list of potential participants that met the following criteria: conducts the flagship ensemble at their university; has performed at one or more American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conferences since 2000; and has been at their current institution for five or more years. The study focuses on the preparation of each institution¿s flagship mixed ensembles. After establishing general background information about the program, ensemble, and current repertoire, subjects participated in three rounds of interviews to establish the parameters of their priorities, time management, and teaching sequence. Representative statements and ideas extracted from the interviews informed the construction of their respective sequences. Though the success and prominence of the three conductors is comparable, they described varying approaches to their preparation periods including: the order or sequencing of musical elements; treatment and prioritization of vocal production; and the program structure and/or application of tools that enable their respective processes.
