Analytical and performance issues in piano solo versions of Franz Liszts Mazeppa

Abstract
The Transcendental Etudes of Franz Liszt exist in three separate versions: Étude en douze exercises (1826), Grandes Études (1837), and the final version, Études dexécution transcendante (1851). It took him twenty-five years to complete all of them. In addition, he wrote another piano version for the fourth etude, Mazeppa, around 1840. Chapter I will address the history and background of all versions of the Transcendental Etudes, especially No. 4, Mazeppa, and its symphonic poem version, which was completed in 1854. The second chapter will focus on the first three solo piano versions of the fourth etude. I will thoroughly examine the evolution of the compositional style by comparing and contrasting the first three versions, using musical examples. Chapter III is devoted to the last version (1851) of the Etude, Mazeppa. The 1851 version displays a more extensive reworking of the 1840 version than the 1840 version does relative to the 1837 version. The final chapter offers a pianists perspective on the interpretation of Mazeppa based on its 1851 version. In conclusion, this document aims to benefit the performers of Mazeppa through analysis of all piano versions, especially the 1851 version.
