The decline of classical music audiences in the United States is an issue that is central to the future of this art form. In order for classical music to thrive, its institutions may need to consider altering various aspects of how they present concerts and interact with their audiences. The present DMA Document describes various approaches to innovation in presenting classical music concerts in the early 21 st century. This multiple-case study focuses on the activities of three organizations: the California Symphony; Da Camera of Houston; and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Chapter one presents a statement of the problem regarding the declining audience for classical music; chapter two presents a review of the scholarly literature related to classical music venues, programming, concert experience, educational components of concerts, ticketing and marketing schemes, social media usage by concert presenters, and general literature on audience building; chapter three describes the method used in the study; chapter four presents the results of the study; and chapter five presents a discussion of the results, concluding with suggestions for further research. The document includes three appendices, which comprise transcripts of interviews with participants.
