Abstract | This study presents a critical text of Harold Frederic's 1897 novel, Gloria Mundi. It was completed with the cooperation and approval of the Harold Frederic Edition at The University of Texas at Arlington. The text has been established according to the guidelines of the Modern Language Association's Center for Scholarly Editions. In addition to the text itself, which is a transcription of Frederic's holograph manuscript emended to incorporate all readings adopted for the critical text, this study contains: A History of the Text, which documents the development of the novel from its inception through publication; a Textual Introduction, which includes explanations of the policies and procedures employed in establishing the critical text as well as discussions of all relevant texts and of problems encountered in determining authorial variants from the copy-text; and a Textual Apparatus, which offers a complete record of all variant readings among the relevant texts, notes on problem readings, and a detailed list of Frederic's manuscript alterations. |
