A selective annotated bibliography of research on basic writing: 1975-1986

Abstract

This dissertation is a selective annotated bibliography of articles and dissertations pertinent to the field of basic writing from 1975, the year of the publication of the first issue of the major journal in the field, the Journal of Basic Writing, through June of 1986. It also includes a bibliography of relevant books and an introductory essay. The essay discusses developments in eight areas of the field: error, orality and literacy, cognition and hierarchical theories of development, the writing process, the relationship of reading and writing, collaborative learning, evaluation, and dialects and second languages. It concludes with a section on needed research in the field.
