Abstract | This dissertation examines the need for metaphoric language in modern physics, and how such metaphors have proven important vehicles of communication. Over one hundred metaphors appropriated from ordinary language for use in physics form a glossary in this dissertation. Each entry attempts to explain the rudiments of the physics concept, and whenever possible, provides etymological information on the metaphor, initially and as it is used in physics. |
