dc.description.transcription | 2-22-44Dear Folks,More rain soI have some time to write. It is a necessity that I take time to write anyway, to send this enclosed money order, and to tell this joke on myself. I’ve been carrying the darn thing around with me ever since I bought it. I thought that the whole thing was a receipt and not just a little corner of it. When I bought the thing the mail clerk said, “that’s all,” so I took him at his word and walked out, thinking that he would send the thing to the address that I told him. Last night I was in my room shooting the bull with my roommates when one of them said that he had sent a money order home that he hadn’t heard from. I said that I had too and proceeded to take out my “receipt” to look at the date on it. When they saw me take out the whole thing they nearly diedlaughing. I couldn’t blame them because it was a good joke, even if it was on me. Live and learn. Now about something important. When is Texas’ Independence Day? We Texans, what few there are left, can’t decide whether it is March the 1stor 6th. We must know so that we can celebrate properly.By the way Mama, your “no good cake” turned out to be rather fair after all. I had to go to the post office to get it so on my way back to my barracks I stopped by the barracks that Carl Hathaway, Harvey Harrison, Dorsey Hawkins, Robert Harman, and some of my other friends that you’ve never met live in. That’s as far as I got. They told me to tell you that if you ever cooked any other “no good” cakes that you didn’t want, just send it to them. Never mind that, just continue to send them to me, I’ll see to it that they are properly distributed. This rain isn’t helping anything. The first day we went to the flight line they told us that we were three hours behind right then. I’ve flown 45 minutes since then. So you can see that when this weather does clean up they’ll fly us to pieces. They let us off the flight line only abut 1 hr. early despite the rain, so the rain only provided us with a little extra time, not a half a day as it should. I haven’t flown in so long I might have forgotten how, perhaps not though. The rain hasn’t held up drill, P.T., or ground school however.Speaking of ground school, I am taking more meteorology, navigation, aircraft identification, code, and a couple of new courses, radio and instruments. No telling what else new they’ll pull on me before long.Time to eat so I’ll quit.Love,Joe | |
