My Dear Mr. Carter, (Illegible) the controversy between you and "her" or "his" honor, the governance I am constrained to say "Lay (?) on McDuff (?)" etc. of course, your friends knew just what your attitude would be with reference to the Urgent Request of her-his lordship, and I want to congratulate you most heartily on the splendid (Illegible) on which you (Illegible) handle (Illegible) its your address to the "people of Texas" (Illegible) old of bath (Illegible) hide and hair and is just a rebuke to the villains and vituperative monstrosity that he is-- As between a gentlemen who might take an occasional drink and whose hospitality manifests itself in ministering to the comfort and pleasure of his friends and guests, and one who is void of principle and whose official acts for both past and present are a stench in the nostrils of decent citizen, the good people of Texas will not be (Illegible) to request their choice. His (?) letter to you was mendacious, malicious and vile and my only regent is that the proprieties of the (Illegible) (Illegible) not (Illegible) you to tell him to go to H---. His "righted indignation"--perish the thoughts! A rightness impulse (Illegible) fell him (Illegible) on the spot. This letter is to say I'm with you. On with the dance! Cordially Yours, A. N. Berry P.S. I'm sure my good friend, D. (?) Clay Johnson is likewise a friend of yours and you have me permission to show this letter to him. He is one of God's noblemen--Berry.
