dc.description.transcription | Dear Mr. Carter: You're probably wondering who on Earth I am so I'd better start at the beginning and explain that I'm a friend of Gary's and have one just heard that he's been reported missing, and wanted so much to talk to you about how sorry I am about it. I met Gary down in Newcastle last July and we became very friendly, and have been writing to each other every since. He told me that he'd sent you one of my letters once to show you what the girls over her really ike. I don't know if you ever received this. If you did I won't be quite a stranger to you., But in case you didn't I'd just like to say that somehow you don't seem like a stranger to me. Gary had told me such a lot about you and thought such a lot of yoou. It's been one of my biggest regrets that I didn't meet you when you visited N. Ireland last autumn. I last heard from Gary about five weeks ago in a letter dated January 28th when he was in fine health, and somehow although I knew he would have been frighting during the past few weeks, I felt sure he'd be all right. However, it was just yesterday that I read the awful news in our "Belfast Telegram" paper. I've felt quite stunned ever since, I can't just believe it's true. It all seems like a bad dream I don't know anything beyone the fact that he was in an advanced observation post facing the Yaid Pars when the Germans attacked, and was reported missing afterwards. I know you must be a very busy man and are probably heart broekn yourself at the news but I should be so greateful if you find time to write and let me know a few more details, and if you've had any further word. i don't know your private address so shall send this c/o your paper. Please convey my sympather to mrs. Carter and Gary's siter. I just keep praying that Gary will be alright and shall only be living for some news from you about him.. Yours faithfully, Majorie D.
