dc.description.transcription | 17 April 43 Dear Mr. Carter: for three days, I have divorced within a mile of where Amon jr was on Feb. 14th and I have taken advantage of the opportunity to find out all I could for you His organization has also been in this area with us. I have two different opinions to where Amon was on that date. One officer reported that he thought Amon was on an observation point with Lt. Col Waters, observing for his battery. Lt. Col Waters was captured there and is now a prisoner in Germany. Another officer thought that Amon was with a group from his battery that tried to get out of this position when the entire command was ordered to try to break through, and that his group was surrounded and captured. I looked over a portion of Lessandra area myself, and Amon's unit as well as other organizations interested sent searching parties over the area to get what information they could concerning their missing personnel. No trace or information could be found that would indicate that Amon was a casualty. Consequently, my belief is strengthened that he is a prisoner of war somewhere. We have received definite reports on a few of our officers, and some whom we previously thought be be casualties are really prisoners of war. Some were taken to Italy and others to Germany. While this does not give you any definite information, it is all I could gather; and indicates to me that the chances are very remote that Amon could have be a casualty at Lessouda. I hope that you have been successful lin locating him by the time you receive this letter. We are not permitted to use cable or phone services, but I will write you immediately if I receive any further information. Your friend, Pinky. | |
