May 25 - 1943 Dear Mr. Carter, I received the news about Amon from Jane the day they surrendered to us here. It really made the day for me. I know that he will take care of himself and be returned to you OK. I'm sorry I couldn't he couldn't have been with us in the last few battles - you would have had to pay him a small fortune on the basis you'd agreed upon before he left England. Things are not too bright for us now that the fighting is over. There's nothing to do and no place to di it. We feel like the forgotten soldier. It's hot and we still have winter uniforms. Everything is off limits for our men. The mail is particularly bad because we can't get any. Think the boys had rather be fighting again - I know I would. I've been in Tunis and Bizerte - soon as I get up enough energy I'll go to Carthage. Soon the old man is going to take us on a sightseeing trip. Will cover between two and three thousand miles. It's something to look forward to. Nothing more to write. Am going to let the Mediterranean cool me off this afternoon. Don't worry about Amon - he'll be all right. Sincerely, Sidney
