dc.description.transcription | 1950, April 11. Mr. D. K. Atkins, Florence, Texas. Dear Mr. Atkins: I was near your place a couple of Sunday’s ago, and talked to several of your neighbors about a meteorite which fell on the place now occupied by Mr. W. R. Reavis in 1922. I am interested in collecting meteorites, and when one falls there are generally several others in a region. You might happen to find one of these if you will just keep on the lookout in a general way. I don’t expect you to make a search — just wanted to tell you of the possibility. The 1922 fall was a stone weighing 8 lbs., and had a black crust. On older meteorites this rusts to a brown due to the presence of iron as a metal. Of course you might plow up one of any size from a few ounces on up, but if you ever picked up a suspected one and it was actually a meteorite, it would impress you by its relative great weight. They are heavy for their size. If you ever spot anything like this out of the corner of your eye, give it a second look. I hope some day I may hear from you that you have a possible meteorite! Yours most sincerely, [Oscar E. Monnig] | |
