dc.description.transcription1964, Dec. 15 Mr. Wilson Smith, Fort Stockton, Texas. Dear Mr. Smith; I felt like a dog for running off from you Sunday but time ran out on us and we had to get back to Midland to a supper with Mr. and Mrs. Bishop and then I had to be sure to catch my plane. We did drive down to the Sierra Madera and in a little ways, just so Sam Bishop could point out a few things to me that he had heard Eugene Shoemaker and Dr. Bucher discuss when he had them down there a few weeks back. It seems that Bucher, who wrote the original classic paper on Cryptovolcanic Structures, is something of a research associate of Humble's, tho I believe he is at Columbia University. He seems to have been at Houston when he and Shoemaker met there and decided to come out to see the Sierra Madera, and Bishop, who is Humble's man on surface geology in that region, was elected to escort them. I am quite beholden to you for all that you have done to promote to a final successful conclusion my obtaining the iron meteorite from Mr. Eldred. I carried it right with me personally all the way back on the plane, because I shall take no chances on anything happening to it. I also could hardly have closed the trade as expeditiously as I did without your kindness in cashing my check. (Bisho p [Bishop] was amazed--both at your having that much cash on a Sunday and at taking my check so readily.) Be sure to watch the total lunar eclipse Friday night (and maybe Susan will take it in, too). The effect will begin to be noticeable somewhat before 7 p.m. and totality will be from 8.08 to 9.08. Binoculars are nice to watch this with. I was happy to meet your wife and see your home, and wish I had had more time to go over some of the rock and crystal specimens. Sincerely,
