dc.description.transcription | 1960, Feb. 12 Mr. W. P. Rooney 219 N. Water, FortStockton [Fort Stockton], Texas. Dear Sir: I recently got a small iron meteorite from a collector In Midland, Mr. Porter Rankin, and I am trying to trace the history of it to determine where it was originally found. It is a small piece of about a pound in weight, and can be held in the palm of the hand. Mr. Rankin's recollection was that he had got it atFort Stocktonsome [at Fort Stockton some] 10 to 20 years ago. He saw it on a desk in the county courthouse, and believe he was told it belonged to a tax collector-assessor who had recently left office. He said this official had then opened a store in FortStockton [Fort Stockton], and he went around to see him and got his permission to take the meteorite. He recalls that the man told him he had found the object some 10-15 miles out of Fort Stockton while on a deer hunt. If you know anything about this or can give me any clues, I would appreciate the information. If you are not the man, can you tell me the present address of your predecessor in office, Mr. J. L. Moore, should he be still living? Yours sincerely, [Oscar E. Monnig] | |
