dc.description.transcription | Oct 16, 1972 Dear Monnig, Regretfully, I cannot contribute any information about Dr. Hawkins meteorite other than knowing he had found one. He was pretty much a loner when it came to walking fields and creek beds in search of Arrow points & artifacts. our age difference was probably at least 50 yrs, but he was very much interested in showing me where he use to hunt. We spent many weekend afternoons with him standing on the road next to the car directing me in the field to his old finds. Unfortunately, he hunted mainly for relaxation and exercise and never made any notes of his finds except mental. All of these are tone, now, since his death & I doubt that he told or showed anyone except myself where he discovered any of his artifacts. This was because he and other man were big rivals in earlier days & Dr. Hawkins didn't approve of his tactics. I don't know this man's name, but if he is still alive, I think I can locate him through the Archeological Society there. I'll be in Waco for Baylor's Homecoming later this month & will make an effort to find out any information for you. If I can find him he'll probably know something about the meteorite. Enjoyed your letter & hope I can help out. My in-laws live in Fort Worth. Perhaps we could talk when I'm visiting up there. I've always had a lingering curiosity about astronomy and I'm sure you could enlighten me. If I find out anything in Waco, I'll be sure to write. Sincerely Bill Bain | |
