dc.description.transcription1 Fort Sam Houston July 14, 1935 Dear Grandma: I certainly was glad to get your letter. I always am though. I'm glad you had a good time at Uncle Charlies. I wish I had been there. I probably will be next 4th. I'll get my furlough so that it will be in July and August if I can. I had a pretty good Fourth too. We had ice cream, cake, turkey, English peas, etc. We've had watermlon and canteloups and tomatoes for over a month. We have watermelon three or 2 four times a week. We have meat every day such as ham pork chops, chicken, turkey or fish. We also have a pint of milk every morning and coffee if we want it and cereal and fruit etc. We have either lemonade, orange punch, cherry punch buttermilk for dinner and supper too. I'm still going to school two hours every day. I've about learned how to climb a telephone pole without coming down faster than I went up. And I've learned oodles of code names, type names, signs and symbols also. And we've had manual of the pistol how to field strip it etc. I hear we're going to have extra long maneuvers 3 P.S. I'm sending the picture. Its not much good. It was made in drill clothes. They don't look so good bvecause they're made for action and comfort instead of looks. I had my shoulders drawn back to for too. this year. Some say 6 weeks. They will be held at Camp Bullic 20 miles northwest of here. Then some say this regiment and or part of it is going next month to give practice to Reserve officers. It doesn't make much difference to me. I've found out all the ways of communications this company has. Here they are 1 Radio, 2 telephone, 3 telegraph 4 runner, 5 mounted messenger, 6 panel strips (strips of white cloth for airplane signaling) 7 pigeons 8 blinker lights (for night signaling). I'm going to take up Radio later on. That is I'm going to try. There will be more ratings 4 when the increase comes. We need about 60 more men in this one company. Hazel's death came as quite a shock. She was always so full of pep and life. But so is life. And so was Bill Skelton's death a surprise. I wrote to John a good while ago but have never got an answer. I wonder if he got my letter or is just too busy. If you see him ask him. Tell Ray I don't care whether he can write or not, to write anyhow. I wish I could see him. Tell him hellow. Give Bruce my regards and a handshake. I wish he was here. I sure would like to see you, Lots of love, Smith. 1 Fort Sam Houston Texas July 14, 1935 Dear Grandad: I certainly was glad to get a letter from you. I am getting along fine here and having a pretty good time. Of course we have to work but the hours are not long. We get off when we have baseball games and we get off Wed evenings, Saturday evenings and Sundays and Holidays. The rains have stopped here too and its been pretty hot. I'm sorry the cotton came up bad and hope 2 the ground makes lots of feed stuff. I'm glad Grandma has lots of stuff put-up. How are the tomatoes and watermelons. We've been having them here for a month. I'm glad you get lots of milk and butter. I have all the butter I can eat but just a pint of milk a day. Tell Bruce I certainly would like to see him and play with him. I bet he's lots of help with the horses and cow. Tell him to be good and make a good squirrel dog. Have you ever got nannie goat back yet? Bruce would like to play with here I bet. Don't work too hard and don't worry about me being good. I will. Lots of luck Smith. S.L. Green Hq. Co. 23rd Inf. Ft.
