dc.description.transcription1 Fort Sam Houston Texas May 10, 1936 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I don't know whether you had thought much about it or not, but on this day, one year ago I was sworn into the service of the U.S. Army. It certainly doesn't seem that long to me. I'm celebrating my anniversary by sleeping, all morning and I suppose I'll lay around this afternoon. This being Mother's Day we had an extra nice 2 dinner. Fried chicken, ice cream and big Mother's day cakes was the best part. I meant to go swimming this afternoon but it came a flood this morning so I don't think I will. We had a big rain Friday afternoon also. We have been firing the 1000 inch range this week. The first part of the week we fired for practice and preliminary record firing. Friday and Saturday we fired for record. There was only two scores better than mine. If I can do as well on the 200, 300 and 500 yd machine gun range and 3 on the 37 mm. range I will will get $500 extra a month for being an expert gunner. Here's hoping. Next week I'm going to operate a Radio. We put one set here in the Barracks and another out on the range so communication could be maintained. William Green (tank shop foreman) and I were trying to find out if we were of any kin the other day. His folks are all from Kentucky and Tennessee. His father's name was Robert Lee Green and died about 25 or 30 yrs ago. He would have been 4 about 75 yrs. old now. Have you ever heard of him. We go to camp Bullis about the 18th of this month and stay about 30 days. I guess you heard about the big war Dept appropriation. We're supposed to get our new tanks this year. Don't know for sure though. I hope so. Well, tell everybody hello for me. Tell Grandpa and Uncle Cad to take care of themselves. And be sure and do the same for yourself. Lots of love Smith S.L.
