dc.description.transcription1 Camp Bullis Texas June 14, 1936 Dear Grandma & Grandpa, I received your letter a week or two ago and was glad to get it. It has quit raining now and everything has dried up. I stayed on range guard for two weeks and was relieved. I sure was glad of that. We have finished firing the machine gun and 37 mm. gun and I made expert gunner. I am supposed to draw $5 more per month for a year but I don't think it will last over 3 or 4 months because there 2 were so many that made it and there is only a certain amount of money given to each organization for expert pay. We were alloted enough money for about 25 experts. (there is hardly ever that many) and tehre were about 65 that made expert. I made 324 out of a possible 342 with the machine gun. 305 is expert so I had 19 points to spare. Shooting the 37 mm. was lots of fun. It is a small cannon but makes lots of noise and nearly jumps off the ground when fired. We fired from the side of a hill across a valley on the slope of another hill. There were 6 targets scattered over 3 the slope with ranges rom 700 to 1100 yds. The gunner didn't know the ranges or the target he was to fire on until it was his turn to fire. He had to estimate his own range. My target was about 1000 yds or over half a mile. I was allowed 4 shots to hit it. The first shot was a little short, the next was closer and the third was counted a hit. They don't look so big a half mile away. Of course we have telescopic sights that 4 have crossed hairs to sigt by but the targets still don't look so big. Next week we have combat firing and pistol firing. Combat firing will be with machines mounted on trucks, simulating tanks. We will ramble around the hills shooting at imaginary enemies. We have a good swimming pool out here and I'm getting a good tan. I do a little road work now and then to kinda keep in shape. We have a good radio in our tent and I listen to it a lot. Thats what I'm doing now. There is a strong rumor that we will go 5 in next week and make a week's trip to the Texas Centennial at Dallas. Then about July 1, we will take up Military Police Duty for a week or two. Nothing official yet. I would like to come home in July, and I will if I can. However if I can't I will come in September. Maybe I can get 45 days then. If I get off in July I will let you know several days ahead. Its too bad about the bushes taking Irvins crop. I know how it looks to 6 have a field full of buses. Its getting pretty hot here, about 100 now. The President was here Thursday as you have probably read about. Of course I didn't get to see him as as I was out here at the time. Well, I can't think of anything else to write about so I will have to close. Tell Uncle Cad and everybody else Hello for me. Lots of Love Smith. S.L. GREEN 2ND TANK CO. FT. SAM HOUSTON, TEXAS MR.
