dc.description.transcription | 1 Fort Sam Houston August 30, 1936 Dear Grandma & Grandpa, I got you letter last week and of course I was glad to hear from you, as usual. I am feeling fine as per usual and sincerely hope all of you are feeling even better. You certainly have been having lots of company. How did you like little Red-headed Hazel? I supposed she is even worse than she was when I was in Dallas. She's spoled if ever any kid was. She is a pretty little Dickens though. I would have 2 liked to have seen Uncle Gus. I guess he looks about the same. I can't understand why he doesn't have a nervous break-down or something. Its enough to drive a man crazy to stay around that family. it has been awfully hot and dry here for about two months but it rained yesterday and to-day. Consequently has cooled off considerably and a blanket is very comfortable the latter part of the night. I would like to go to the Holiness meeting at Kullichito once or twice just to see Nannie, Veda Pearl Roath etc get "Religion" I'll bet it's a sight worth 3 seeing. I'm glad to hear that Joe Hough was no. 1 man on the Sheriff's ticket. He deserves it and I'm sure he'll make one of the best Sheriff's McCurtain County ever had. I think I told you I passed the Physical Exam for West Point Prep School perfectly. Then my applications, giving my qualifications in school, physical exam results, character etc. were sent to the commanding general for approval. He approved my application so I am to report to Camp Bullis Sept 4 7, 1936. School starts Sept 8 and will be on the order of West Point. We will march to classes, meals etc. Army officers will be our tutors. Instructions will be given in the following: 1 English Grammar & Composition 2 American & English Literature 3 Plane Geometry 4 Algebra 5 General and Ancient History 6 American History. So you see it will be worth going to even if I don't make West Point. I'm going to Camp Bullis the 1st for 3 or 4 days. I'm to be a Radio Operator for the Umpires in a maneuvor that is being held. There are 5 two operators and two truck drivers going from this company. We are going to mount Tank Radios in Pick-up trucks and operate on the move. I hope it doesn't rain while I'm out there. I got another letter from my buddy Paul Nelson. He is in the Phillipines and likes it fine. If I fail to make the grade at the Prep School, that's where I'm headed. I might as well sever there as here and I'll get to see a great deal of the world. (over) 6 Virginia is getting along fine. She was 18 the 24th of this month. She's still taking care of kids and going to school at night. Sooner or later she'll get a good job. David doesn't live with Grandma S. any longer. They couldn't get along. HE lives with an old lady who takes care of several boys like him. virignia says he like his new home fine. Grandma S. has a terrible temper and is hard to get along with. Doris is still sticking it out. Tell Uncle Cad and everybody hello. Take care of yourselves. Lots of love to you all. Smith S.L. Green 2nd Tank Co. St. Sam Houston Texas Mr. W.M.
