Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that growing up poor and having a cognitive schema or mindset for the world/people as unpredictable is predictive of eating in the absence of hunger (EAH; Hill et al., 2016; Proffitt Leyva Hill). The purpose of the current study was to examine how ghrelin, the hunger hormone, is related to childhood factors such as low SES, environmental unpredictability, and EAH. Results revealed a significant relationship between the unpredictability schema and ghrelin slopes across time for individuals with high versus low unpredictability schemas. Specifically, individuals with a more robust unpredictability schema had a flatter ghrelin response to a tailored caloric load compared to individuals with a less robust unpredictability schema. Low childhood SES and environmental unpredictability were not significant predictors of an unpredictability schema, and there were no differences in calories consumed between those with a higher versus lower unpredictability schema. The results of this study indicate that mindset is important for energy regulation.
