Abstract
Using the aesthetic theories of Romanticism, Transcendentalism, and Existentialism, Reese Brown writes a creative non-fiction piece intertwining her personal experiences with academics and spirituality. Through the braided structure incorporating research, artistry, and theory, the author expresses the importance of developing a personal theory of self-hood while encouraging the reader to recognize the power of self that lies within each individual, including them. Further, Brown defines the self through a mediation of her own experience and the concepts of aesthetic and philosophic thought leaders. Lastly, she relates the importance of our individual spiritual, mental health, and creative journeys to the obligation each person has to share their magic with the world. Brown acknowledges the mystery of the self while affirming the importance of continuing to ask the question: who are we?
