Abstract
This interactive creative project is comprised of one long collage essay that explores the way our experiences shape us. Using examples such as tattooing, scars and scarification, birthmarks, bitemarks, fear, bug bites, religion, heritage and ethnicity, puzzle pieces, Japanese internment camps, sickness and illness (mental and physical), and personal experiences with family and friends, I investigate the ways in which we, as people, are all marked in some way by ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Because it is a collage essay, the form asks the reader to interact and infuse meaning into this piece by connecting ideas and drawing parallels between the carefully placed fragments of writing. The objective of this piece is to illustrate that life doesn’t leave us unscathed, and our marks—our trauma and our experiences (mundane or extraordinary)—are what make up our individuality and give us a sense of wholeness.
