Abstract
This dissertation examines the life of American businessman, lecturer, reformer, promoter, and eccentric, George Francis Train, focusing on his activities and thoughts during the 1860s and 1870s, to determine what they say about the man and his times and what the rise of his myth and the fall of his memory suggest about history and human nature. This work uses the term "Young America" as a lens by which to examine various topics including the American press, the American Civil War, race, civil liberties, western expansion, the rise of the American corporation, women's rights, religion, and mental health.
