Abstract
In this study I have argued that traditional discussions of the Messianic Secret in Mark are unconvincing and fail to account for its nature and functions in the Gospel narrative. In my argument I have proposed a new reading that multiple literary motifs and themes including secrecy and openness in the Gospel interact to display who Jesus is in terms of his benefactions to and relationship with the vulnerable non-elite crowds. In my argument that the Messianic Secret is a counterpart of the openness motif, these two motifs, namely, secrecy and publicity, literarily work together to create rumors about Jesus and to enhance his fame and reputation and thereby, draw crowds to Jesus. This literary composition converges on a single aim: constructing a distinctive patronage of Jesus from which the Gospels audience benefits, and which it is to imitate in similar actions.
