Abstract
The only known Paleocene basaltic volcanic complex in the Trans-Pecos igneous province in west Texas was discovered by Dr. Thomas Lehman within the northwestern sector of Big Bend National Park, Texas. The pyroclastic deposits of this volcanic complex are intercalated with Paleocene strata of the Black Peaks Formation. Characteristics of the pyroclastic deposits indicate erupted from predominantly phreatomagmatic explosions, and they consist of proximal basaltic tephra ring deposits with a complicated structure. Detailed mapping has identified 36 fossilized trees within these pyroclastic deposits.
