Abstract
In this thesis, I explore the relationship between academia and fanfiction while identifying ways in which the young fanfiction author may benefit academically from this extracurricular activity. I argue that fan communities are developing skills that young writers will find useful in academic settings, as they engage in research, writing and editing, critical commentary and collaborative pursuits. Additionally, I utilize popular scholarship from fan, gender, literature and composition studies in order to validate the genre, while pushing for a greater exploration of literacy practices in fan communities. This thesis determines that fan activity is not something that educators should take lightly, and that fanfiction should be further studied as it impacts and subtly shapes student writing
