Dear Amon: I just received your March 9th letter and one from Bob Harper's of the 15th and alos one from Ruth on the same day. Ruth's and Bob's letters contained the terrible news of Amon, Jr. I immediately contacted Eisenhower's headquarters to find out what I could. They tell me they have no information other than the fact that he is missing. Please don't give up hope. There is a very good chance that he could have been taken prisoner. It takes some time for the lists of prisoners to be made available to us. A number of my boys who were reported missing in December and January have only recently been found through the intereational Red Cross to be prisoners of war. I hope and pray that you will hear similar news in the near future. My heartfelt symphath goes to you with this letter and I will keep trying to get additonal information. I only hope that the sacrifice of your finest youth will serve a worth while and sometimes gravve doubts assail all of us, that it can be so easily be in vain , if unscrupulous leaders acheive a measure of control on our government. Government bureaucracy can destroy the future that exists for American youth. Amon, Jr. represents the finest type that the youth of American can present to the world. On his shoulders, and the shoulders of men like him, rests the future of our country and in fact, of the whole world. Again , I repeat, don't give up hope. Sincerely your friend, Elliot Roosevelt
