dc.description.transcription1 Fort Sam Houston, Tex. October 1, 1935 Dear Grandma and Grandpa: How is you all by now. I am getting along fine and hoe you are the same. I just weight 172 lbs now. The Army is still plodding along. Here lately we've been having a good deal of gas mask and istol drill and war strength battalion exercises. We have maneuvers two weeks from now. That'll be fun, you know. Camping out in the hills for two weeks having a continous battle all the time. 2 You ought to have seen me riding a mule the other day. The animals have to be exercised about every day that they're not used. Each man rides one and leads one. Ive rode a way out in the country to a run around and run them around that a few times. 1st Lieutenant Teller got off his horse and climbed a mule and tried to make him buck but didn't have much success. One boy was thrown on his face in a rock pile by a little ol' red mule of about 17 hands and 1500 lbs. 3 But that was at the stables. I guess I've got off the mule leading now I've been a message center clerk on the last two or three problems. When you see Uncle George tell him when anybody makes fun of his riding to them them thats the way the Army rides. They have some fine horses here, polo horses too, and I haven't seen one with a saddle gait yet. All officers and mounted men have to bounce when they ride. They call it posting. They have a certain way to saddle a horse. The saddle has to be so many inches from a certain joint etc. Well, I guess I have to close. Tell Ray and Pearl hello and tell them to write. I would like to see them. Well, lots of love I hope you're getting along fine. Smith P.S. We have 20 new men in the co. now. S.L. Green Hdqrs. Co. 23rd Inf. Fort Sam Houston, Tex Mr. W.M.
