dc.description.transcription1 Ft. McDowell, California September 27, 1939 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, Please forgive me for not writing sooner but it just seems that I get worse and worse about writing. I turned in over here last Thursday and expect to sail on the U.S.A.T. Grant about October 4th. Virginia had a bouncing boy on Sunday, the 10th. We stayed up until about 11:00 P.M. that night of the 9th and she was feeling fine 2 then. She woke Claude and I up about 2:30 A.M. with labor pains. While she and Claude got dressed I called a taxi and his mother. They got to the hospital about 3:00 A.M. and the baby was born at 5:22 A.M. He weighed 6 lbs 2 oz and has straight black hair and kinda blue eyes. Virginia stayed in the hospital for 10 days and is home now, feeling fine. While Virginia was in the hospital, St. Marys 3 from Texas cam out here and played U.S.F. ST. Mary's beat 7-6. It was a good game. I called John up at the hotel and he got us 5 tickets. Keith, Claude, Keith's sister, and I went. Doris decided not to go. Also took John over to the hospital to see Virginia. Claude and I went to the Fair on the 18th. We stayed all day and until about eleven at night and still didn't see everything. There is some very interesting exhibits to be seen. And the "Gayway" is fine. I'll send some pictures later, maybe. I am at the West Garrison on Angel Island. We stop at Alcatraz every time we ride a steamer over to Frisco. I can't get a pass except on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I've already found two guys that I know. one of them was 3 yrs in the tank co. The other two guys haven't showed up yet. I expect them in in the next day or two. (over) 4 Well, I must close. It is time to line up for chow. There are about 800 men here and I don't like to get on the end of the line. I'll get paid Saturday and send send most of what I owe. Tell everybody hello for me. No use writing to this place because I'll probably be gone by then. Love, Smith S. Green Mr. W.M. Green Box 426 Broken Bow Oklahoma
