Abstract
This study assessed the effectiveness of RPT, a relapse prevention training program, with a sample of 103 drug addicted probationers. Results of this study indicated four major findings. First, the program was able to be successfully implemented with a sample of drug addicted adult probationers. Abstinence violation rates went down and program retention went up. Second, associations between background, cognitive, and behavioral measures and RPT goals (UA results at RPT completion, program completion, and posttreatment knowledge scores) were identified. Third, knowledge maps were helpful in enhancing information retention. The group that was given knowledge map supplements scored significantly higher on the knowledge tests (administered after each lesson) than did the group without the map supplements. Fourth, graphically enhanced maps were perceived to be more useful and clearer than maps from the standard lessons, but posttreatment knowledge scores were significantly higher on items from the standard lessons. The implications of these findings and suggestions for future studies are addressed.
