Lamesa, Texas. June 1, 1943 Mr Amon G. Carter. Ft Worth, Texas. Dear Sir, Some time ago I wrote you about my Son P.F.C. William H. Witt of Co "E" 19th Engineers, as he was resported as missing by the War Dep. On the same date as your Son. So far I have had no word of him being a prisoner of Germany. I am wondering if you have been able to get a letter from your son. I have cut out all the articles regarding your Son from The Star Telegram, and want to keep them, as I feel some how Howard might have known him 2 Everyone started calling him Bill as soon as he enlisted and he always signed his letters to me that way altho I could not get use to his calling him self Bill. He was a person who had a word and smile for everyone and when he made friends he always kept them. I just can't understand why I can't get some word of him. Each time he made a change since he landed across he always sent me a cable telling me he had landed safely. If I can't get word of him being a prisoner I don't feel I can bear it if I can't learn of what happened to him. If he 3 was killed when they reported him as being missing. I want to know as this suspense of waiting is terrible. I have already received a couple of Christmas pkgs back we sent him that did not reach him before he was reported missing. Surely made me feel sad. I read thie article in paper of the way your son was captured by Arabs and turned over to the Germans. I understand how badly you must feel about this, I'm wondering if the same thing happened to Howard. His sister dreamed he had also been held awhile by the Arabs. I am wondering Mr Carter, if you would be allowed through your letters to your Son to ask him if he knew my son or anything that 4 might have happened to him. I would like to have my sons picture placed in your paper if I learn he's a prisoner as we have relatives all over Texas. I also want to say I like your paper so much, and most of all you keep us informed about so many of our boys, and also the list of prisoners, I never miss an item reading of some mothers sons being missing I have another Son in Africa of Co. "C" 109th med Br. Have just learned recently he's been close up to the front Have had no word from him since Feb 28th. I'm sure you don't care to ans. these letters, but will you please put an article in paper saying you have had a letter from your son. I know it takes an awful long time for over mail to come through from these prison camps. I'm hoping you will soon ahave word from him and will learn he's alright. My best wishes. Sincerely Mrs Lula Butler.
