dc.description.transcription | 9-24-45Dear Folks,Happy Monday night to you. This has been another hard day on me. My day consisted of saying “here,” at 0700 and then again at 1400. Tough war! Things start looking up tomorrow however, and should be pretty brisk for the rest of the week. Starting tomorrow afternoon at 1630 I am O.D.again. It ain’t leagal to do that to me but the records are messed up as usual, and I am already assigned and its too late to change. I am also going to fly Wed. morning, Thur. morning, and Thur. night. For this particular 12 hours work I will get paid $225. Then I get off from 1600 Friday until 0900 Monday. I talked them into letting me off all day Sat. because I was stuck on O.D. again. I then have an “invite” to spend the weekend with Rickey, my little detective, and her family out in Anaheim. I met them yesterday afternoon and like them fine. They have a fine acre grove of oranges hooked onto their house, pretty nice.I was supposed to go out there and eat supper Tuesday night and then with another family here in Long Beach Wed. night but being O.D. kinda snafu’s that. This other family, The Baker’s, here in Long Beach are old friends of Rickey’s family and Rickey spends about half her time with them. Mrs. Baker is Italian and cooks like Iris says Mrs. G. cooks. I ate Sunday dinner with them, before wewent to Anaheim, and what a feed it was. Fried chicken was the main dish and I didn’t get around to even tasting half the vegetables. She was going to cook spagetii (How do you spell it) Wed. night and wanted me to come out and eat some even with Rickey not going to be there. In case you are wondering what happened to Sat. night, Rickey and I went to the Hollywood Bowl Symphony and saw “Marie for the Wounded.” Onthe first part of the program was Leopold Stravinsky and his symphony orchestra. Betty Davis read a Flag Day Prayer and Arthur Rubinstein played a piano solo, also on the first part. The second part was take care of by Ken Carpenter, Jack Haley, who acted as M.C., Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Bob Burns, Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna, and John Scott Trotter conducted the orchestra. Our seats, reserved by the way, cost five dollars apiece, but I would pay twice that to see the same thing again. During the first part, with all that long haired stuff, I couldn’t think of anybody butH.B. Balch. He would have really enjoyed it. Edward G. Robinson sat right in back of us and I nearly stepped on him once. He is a little bitty devil. Gene Tierne sat about three rows in front of us too. I bought a program and will send or bring it home one of these days before long.Jim Vader was supposed to report to shipping and receiving today to start clearing the field for discharge but he hasn’t come back from his leave yet. I called his aunt in L.A. and she said that she got a letter from him sayingthat he would be back tomorrow or the next day. I think that this about brings everything up to date so I’ll quit for now.All my love,JoeP.S. I wrote Mr. Baker today. | |
