dc.description.transcription | 6-6-43Dear Folks,Is been so long since I have written that I don’t how, when, or where to start. I think that the last time I wrote I told you that it was hot here, well matters along that line haven’t changed a bit. It was too hot and I was too lazy so I didn’t go to church this morning. I intended to stay in my room and write letters but I was so uncomfortable, hot and sticky in there that I came upon the roof where I can blister and really get hot. That is where that I am now. I will be a beautiful shade of red and really hot this afternoon. I’ll start back with my recovery from the mumps. I told you about the shake up that took place. Fortunately I was out of the hospital a day before it all started so I was able to see that all of my stuff was properly taken care of. The way the set up used to be was this There weresix squadrons, comparable to 6 companys in the infantry, field artillery, Texas Defense Guard etc., A, B, C, D, E, and F. There were five academic groups A, B, C, D, & E. The A’s had five more month to spendhere, the B’s four, the C’s three, etc. The academic groups were distributed among all of the squadrons but now its fixed where every one is in the same squadron as they are academic group. There are a lot more Academic C’s, what I am, so they comprise squadrons C and D. In four or five months they should have this College Training Program running smoothly, that is if they don’t stop it entirely. It’s a good thing I’m not at the head of this thing or else it would have been stopped about a month ago. Any way, I am Academic C, with only two and a half months more to spend here and those two and a half months can’t go by too soon to suit me. Last Saturday, not yesterday, I flunked a Physics test so I can’t leave the post today. Yesterday I think I flunked a Trig test so I probably won’t be able to go any where next week. Oh well. I’ll save my money. Perhaps you are good and confused by now because I said earlier in this letter I didn’t go to church because I didn’t want to, and then I just got through saying Iwasn’t allowed to leave. That is easily explained. We are allowed church going privileges on Sunday morning no matter if we flunk everything. We are also allowed to leave Wednesday nights if our squadron wins the weeks competition and if our grades are upto a certain high standard and a bunch of other things meet up with approval. Any how only a few get to out on Wed. night. I’ve just been once since I’ve been here. The hardest thing about it here is the guard duty. About once every five days I hear my name called, and guard duty is not fun. We are on for 24 hours. Standing duty 2, off four, on two and off four go to classes and then on two more. At a real army post you are given the next day off but not here. And you are expected to get your lessons and stay awake in class the day you are on guard duty and the day afterwards, drill and taps call too believe me its hard. You no more than recover until you have to go on again. Everybody else is doing it except the band members so I can too. Well I’m off ofthe roof now and in my room after eating chow. I am just a slight shade of pink, not blistered at all. I’ll have to try again next Sunday I guess. I know you want to know about my room mates so I’ll tell you about them. All in all, they aren’t as satisfactory as my last ones although they are all right. The one I like best is from Milwaukee, Wis. His name is John Dumbleton. He is black headed, about my size, friendly, and an all around good fellow. There is another one from Milwaukee. His name if Fritz Regner. He is an athlete, and a pretty good one too. Of course his record isn’t as good as Ross McClintock’s, my ex-room mate but he wrestles, boxes, plays football, and is a trackman. I haven’t completely figured him out yet but he is going to be all right I | |
