dc.description.transcription5-2-44Dear Folks,You are now reading a prohibited letter. I am on the flight line awaiting my turn to ride with my instructor which won’t be until 10:45. I should be out sitting in a parked airplane familiarizing myself with the cockpit, or else doing some of the required reading, but I am tired of doing that at the present so I’ll continue to write this prohibited letter. When I got up this morning at 4:15 it looked like it was going to be a bad day with flying probably called off, then is when I stuckthis sheet of paper in my pocket, but as it turned out it is a rather nice day, especially for the neck of the woods.For the sake of the record, I got Mama’s letter yesterday afternoon, so it must take the mail 2 ½ or 3 days for mail to make the journey to and from. Lets hope that I can do better than that when and if I get my furlough upon graduation? I was awfully sorry to hear about Tommy Bullington being reported missing. That could mean everything from the worst on up to nothing very serious. Let me know as soon as you find out anything else. Also let me know if you can find out how, when, where, and why,L.H. had to land with only one wing. If one wing did come off on the take off or landing he was lucky to come out unscathed, if such was the case.Istill don’t have anything to say about the flying end of the deal around here because I haven’t been up again yet. All of my rides have to be dual until I get at least 6 hours and so do all of the other four students that have the instructor as I do. After we all solo we start going on Buddy rides. That is, two cadets go up together with no instructor. It takes two men to push all of the knob switches, cranks, etc. so there is no solo flying. Buddy flying is more fun than solo anyway, there is someone to talk to when flying gets boring especially on long cross countries. You folks can prepare to crawl out of that sack and answer the phone some morning at about 4:30 because the next morning often I solo or that is go up without an instructor but a cadet instead. I’m going to call home. That probably won’t be for a week so sleep in peace for a while yet.Its time I got to work and besides I’m out of paper so I’ll quit. I’ll write the next time I can steal a few minutes.Love,Joe
