dc.description.transcription | 9-4-44Dear Folks,Please excuse the pencil because my fountain pen is in my foot locker which has not arrived as yet.As Mama has probably already told you, I am at Tucson, Arizona, the home of Davis-Monthan Field. It is a very nice field, quite similarto H.A.A.F. in looks, but not in duties. It is a good deal larger than Harlingen and the most beautiful part of it is that the field, Tucson itself, and quite a bit of the surrounding territory is in a valley, completely surrounded by mountains. It is nice and warm here and the sky is blue, the grass is green and the clouds are white. Everything is just like I like it except that the work is going to be TOUGH! We fly 6 to 8 hrs. almost everyday and the days we don’t fly its ground school. They told us thatwe would be free to leave the post at any time when we weren’t doing something but the Col. was smiling when he said it.Tucson seems to be a rather nice town and with the University of Arizona here it shouldn’t be difficult to find something to do just because we ever do get off.Papa I guess that Mama told you that I am woefully short on cash and request that about $40.00 of that last $100 money order be returned. I lent a boy $20 and had some unexpected expenses too. And besides that 48 hours is a long time to stay on a troop train without gambeling just a little but don’t make any extra trips to the bank though because I am not broke but I will need some money before the 15th.It is time for chow so I am going to go eat before the rest of these wolves eat up all the food. I’ll write when I learn something new.Love,Joe | |
