dc.description.transcription | December 18, 1944 Dear Dad, Received your letter of Oct 31, but am still missing the letters you wrote Oct 9, and 19th. The picture of Col. Drake was the first we have received since he got home. Red cross Xmas parcels arrived last week and will be issued to us on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. Out food situation looks a lot better. The Robert Burns cigars I am getting now are swell. I don't like the Panatela type very much. I still want to stay over here one or tow months after is all over. It would be a shame to be over here so long and see so little. It's hard to see much from behind barbed wire. Also I study my German everyday and I would like to try it out. I don't know what the plans for us are, but we may have to stay here awhile anyways. I had letter from Giless and he thinks will stay where he is for a while. there really isn't an place they can send him. From what he said, it must be very quite where he is. Here is a quotation by Jefferson and I agree with him: "The pleasure of a trip to Europe will be less than you expect but the utility greater. It will make you adore your own country, its soil, its climate, its equality, liberty, laws, peoples, and manners. My God! How little do my countrymen known what precious blessing they are in possession of in which no other people on earth enjoy." I found this in a book tonight. We are all fine and place on a big Xmas, not possible without the Xmas parcels. Can you send me one of those small maps of Texas, showing the circulation by counties? Just place it in letter. Was really to hear about Buddy Russell. Send a picture of him Love to all, Amon Jr | |
