November 23, 1943 Dear Mr. Carter, This letter may come as a surprise but I know Amon Jr. will be pleased that I am writing. You will have got over the disappointment of his being made a POW but my assurances that is he able to care for himself will come as a great encouragement to you and from a message of goodwill from Christmas shore. We were in the same ward when Junior had a shell of jaundice. We found we had much in common and he has promised to visit me at my house in the country when happier times return for us all. Before he moved to his new camp, he had recovered fully, was in tremendous spirits, and had an important Camp appointment. That of parcels officer, which he was filling extraordinarily well, when you write to him, please give him my remembrances. Our plans for after the War will doubtless amuse you. Amon was to visit England and I was to show him the historic places in which he was obviously keenly interested, whereas I had to visit the states and do a lecture tour~ It seems we belong to similar fraternal organizations, so that all seemed to set for a pleasant and friendly reminder when peace returns. I am in Education, with journalistic connections, horticulture being my hobby and Amon is I hope, coming to see my gardens one day. Our experiences perhaps, better, but I do assure all of you who love him, that they will have a refining and manly influence of the right fellows, and Amon is of those. Yrs., very sincerely. Winfred Deacon
