Bryan Texas, Monday Aug. 16th, 75 My dear Sallie: I was feeling quite unwell this morning; and as I cannot study any for my discourse this morning, I drop you a few lines. Saturday night we had no preaching on account of the rain. Yesterday morning the crowd was not large, but I was in good plight for preaching, and did well. Last night the court house was filled, and I was in poor trim for preaching. Thought I did poorly, but was complimented by a very intelligent brother. No additions since Friday night, 4 to this date. The church is in a wretched condition; several members will not speak to each other, and on this account do not go to meeting at all. Bro. Kendrick is an eternal scold and makes many of the sisters so mad that they can hardly look at him. From this you can see that the prospects for doing good are not flattering. Bro. Kendrick will insist on my remaining over next L.D. but I do not think that I shall do so. I see now that it would have been better for me to have held the meeting here when he was gone. I preach and he scolds. From this on we shall have meeting in the day & at night also. 3 I think that I am giving satisfaction to all the members who come to meeting, especially to the sisters. I warmed up the cold hearts of some of them yesterday. Some who have not been attending are coming to hear me and seem well pleased. I shall try to give them a good warm talk today, if I can get in proper feeling. I think that I shall speak on the subject of the “Christian family.” Shall base my remarks on 1st P. 2:9 . Chosen generation may be very properly rendered. Select 4 or chosen family. From this I shall show that the family is the highest type of the church. From the family relation we may learn many important lessons of duty pertaining to the church. All the members of the family are, or should be, in full sympathy with each other. They all strive for the comfort and happiness of each other. If there is a vacant seat in the family circle, all are anxious to learn the cause. I shall speak of the necessity of bearing with each other in our little wrongs. We all have weaknesses, and we must bear one another’s burden and so fulfill the law of Christ. Love, love, love, A. Clark
