Thorps Springs, Texas July 1st 78 My Dear Husband. Your precious letter of 26th came last night, I am always so glad to get your sweet letters if it were not for them I could not endure these long separations. I have not had the blues until yesterday. I have been feeling so much better than I ever do at some times, but yesterday it was raining, and such a long lonesome day, that I could not help feeling low spirited. Little Carlie has not been well for several days he has two more teeth coming dear sweet boy he is so good and affectionate, he kisses all of us every little while for papa. He dont talk but can make us understand his wants. There was a heavy rain last night everything in the vegetable line is plentiful have not seen any fruit. Our grass looks well will be ready to cut in a few days. The well is about thirty feet deep there has been so much rain that they can not work all the time, have done nothing today. Robby is doing no good here, he did very well for a few days, I shall send him home just as soon as they get water in the well. He only makes more work for me, never brings any water only when I tell him. I tell him every morning and that is all we get all day if it was not for the rain water we could not get along at all. I can’t get him up of a morning, some times Addie takes the bell and rings it over him before we can wake him. If he would get up and make a fire I would not mind his being here. I often have to make it with the baby in my arms he is a big eater never eats more than seven or eight good size buiskets [sic], I think maybe I can get the girl in a few weeks. Her mother cannot spare her until Manda can go home. She is staying with Charley’s wife who has been sick a long while. If I do not get any one you must not be uneasy for I am not afraid to stay alone perhaps you had better try to find a cook. I know I cannot do the work after school commences. I went out to Sister Flemming’s one day last week and to Mothers one day don’t think I will visit any more this year. Sister Hall spent the day with me on Thursday Brother H. is out hunting a location. Mr. Jarratt did not come to see if I had any word to send you. I had a better opinion of him than that. Jessie reads every day. Addie don’t like to read much. The children send love. We want you at home very much. May our father take care of you. Affectionately, Sallie.
