Ann Arbor, Mich Nov. 5th, ‘93 My dear Mama, I don’t know who of you I owe a letter but believe I have written to all of them since you. Have just returned from church. We had a good sermon but my mind wandered a good deal. I don’t think I have ever seen or heard a preacher who can say more good things than can Bro. Willett, our preacher here. Certainly he comes nearer to me, says more things that seem especially for me than anyone I have ever heard. He is now preaching a series of sermons now on the church and young men, and surely no mans could be found better fitted to preach the hearts of young men. Last Tuesday was Halloween and we had a big “rush” on the University campus. Just imagine 500 or 600 boys yelling, pushing, crowding in every direction and you can get an idea of the uproar. It was my first experience of the kind so I was more of a spectator than anything else. After the “rush” they built a large bonfire, puling on boxes, boards, fences and finally tearing down an old out-house for material. I left before the crowd broke up, and perhaps it is well I did. They stopped the street-car and I think got it off the track. There happened to be some policemen on the car and they arrested 3 or 4 of the boys and took them to jail before the crowd could interfere. The faculty don’t make any attempt to keep the boys from having all the fun They want to, and it is a wonder to me they don’t do even greater damage, there are so many of them together. I need a letter from the Decatur bank today with a check for $71.00 which they had collected for me. So now I have almost enough money on hand to carry me clear through without calling on Sister. Next year it will only take about $2.00 or $2.50 to take me through as I wont have to buy so many clothes, or pay so much tuition I don’t know whether I told you or not, I am getting my washing done, except shirt & collars, for 35 cents a dozen, and as I don’t have a dozen a week it only costs me about 25 cents including what my shirts cost at the laundry. I am wearing my negligee shirts now during the week. The boys nearly all wear them. I never need any word from Uncle Jesse about the kinsfolk. Did he ever write, or have you ever written him about it? It would be a great cousolation to me to be able to find even a second or third cousin in this Strange country. Christmas we have a vacation of two weeks and I wcould hunt them up if there are any in this part of the state. Nobody ever says a word about Roy or Zemmie. I suppose they are all right tho’ or somebody would say something about it. Roy has not written to me, nor has a single word been said about him since I left home. Tell him to at least send me his love if he can spare the time. I would also be glad to know what has become of Zemmie and if she can get off from her arduous studies for a few minutes, please have her write her name on a slip of paper and send me so I won’t forget her altogher. Sister and Papa write to me regularly and you can hardly have any idea how much good these letter do me. I get up about three mornings out of the week very blue and almost homesick; if I can but get a letter it drives away melancholy and helps me all day. I am sorry I have not had time to write more and oftener, and perhaps as my studies are arranging themselves I can send a short letter in the middle of the week. I have not weight lately but feel about 10 pounds heavier than when I left home. Can fee myself growing strong under the rigorous gymnastic exercise I out to take it every day but don’t get down _____ than three or four times a week. Don’t worry at all about my bathing for now I have a bath at least three times a week and more if I go oftener to the gymnasium. I wish Carlie had this exercise it would son make him straighten up. I must close now and write a few lines to sister. Love to all. I am still hoping soon to hear from Roy and Zemmie. Perhaps I can find time to write them a few lines soon. Good-night, Affectionately, Addie C.
