dc.description.transcriptionThorps SpringOct. 16,1893.Dear brother:Myrtle left this morning and what little leisure time I’ve had I’ve felt lonely. We all enjoyed her visit and it was very pleasantto her also. Last Friday evening Messrs Campbell and Miller accompanied M.and me to the sociable and Saturday evening Messrs Pharesand Miller accompanied us to the lecture. The young men were very attentive to her and added much enjoyment to her stay. I wished for you all the time I was listening to the lecture –it was grand. “The Master Passion” Friendship -he told us -is the the master passion. We likea book or lecture if the writer or lecturer thinks as we do. He told us of a certain preacher who said he could fill his church with his acquaintances and his pew –which held but two –with his friends. And I thought how many of us can truly say this. He said “we know not who are our friends” He based his–or built –his lecture on this passage –“Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends.” It was all too pretty for me to try to give you any idea of it. But I want to tell you one anecdote –if I can –It was about an old negro preacher who had a confused idea of the scriptures. His subject ofwas “Women of the Bible.” He began –“mybretheren,there was Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene, and that other Mary and Jezebel, -now my bretheren King Esikiarand his men was a goin along the street one day and they saw Jezebel lookin out of a winder up stairs in a house. –and she made faces at em, and King Esikier commanded his men to go up and threw her down, and theywent up and throwed her down, -and, and he commanded ‘em to go up and throw her down agin, and they went up and throw’d her down agin, and -and he commanded ‘em to go up and throw her down seven times and they went and throw’d her down seven times –and –and he commanded ‘em to go up and throw her down seventy times seven times and they went up and threw her down seventy times seven times –and likewise the woman died also,and they took up of the fragments twelve basketsfull and two small fishes.”Copeland will be here the fourth of next month he hasis considered the best of all.Free school opened today sixty four pupils –you can imagine what an enviable position I have. I’m going to take it allas easy as possible and not worry about anything. People expect me to get thinand wornout over the work, but I intend to surprise them. Blanche will help me three periods during the day and in this way pay her tuition to the close of school. I am surprised that you had not heard from me when last you wrote for you had had time to hear -if lettersdon’t all reach you let me know.Bro. Claude L.Jones will be here some time in December. Have to stand the examination Friday and must get to my reviewing. Much love.If you hear anything new in my line let me know. By all means study Elocution if you have time –for I want you to be a lecturer (over) and you will need it especially in this calling. While listening to Dr. Hedley Saturday evening I made up my mind that you should be a big lecturer –you can-so now prepare, -begin early and by the time you are nearing thirtyyour name will be made. I do really want you to do this. Think of it. Uncle Tommie asked if you made any arrangements with the paper to write for them. I have notified the bank to sue for your money, but have heard nothing –if you are in need of any moreI can send you fifty at once. Let me know, Yours–Sister.
