Oct 7, 1939. Dear Mr. Carter, Under separate cover, I am mailing you a photograph of an oil painted portrait of the late Will Rogers. I created this work of Mr. Rogers during one of his visits to Washington D. C. in 1933. From the best available information, it is one of the very few portraits posed for from life, by Mr. Rogers. At the present time, it is in Mr. Jack Dewpsey's possession, as a coutresy loan. It has always been my desire that this portrait find a permanent home in the most-deserving place. Because of your offices, in the Will Rogers Memorial Commission, I feel that you would be well qualified to make some suggestions. Would you kindly? Trusting that I may have the pleasure of your reply to my inquiry, I beg to remain Very Truly yours, Bernhard Godwin
