dc.description.transcription1 Fort Sam houston, Texas October 13, 1935 Dear Grandma & Grandpa- I got your letter last week and I was sure glad to hear from you. I got a letter from Florence a day or two before I got yours and she said Uncle Cad was back with you. Tell him I would like to see him. I'm going to try to get off a few days Christmas if I can. Then of course I'll be back to see everybody. 2 Don't you worry about me going down in that "grand-daddy" hole again. Once was enough for me. I went in a bigger cave than that while I out there though. We're going back to Bullis the twentieth for a weeks maneuvers. The papers say its a maneuver of the completely motorized second Division but I can't see anything motorized about those Jassacks that I lead. Yes, Florence and Hazel Luttrell both told me that Grover had married also Helen Grubbs and Geraldine Richardson. I 3 never expected Grover or Helen to get married so soon. Helen always said she'd never get a high school education and then marry a mill hand and be a housewife the rest of her life. Yes, we have radio school several nights a week. We're learning about the works of Radio now and soon we will be able to make a radio ourselves. Yes, the Ethiopians and Italians are fighting and from all indications they won't be the only ones. After a while 4 we get three daily papers and keep up on all the news and the radio has the latest about the war and everything. There has been a rumor around here that the 23rd is going to be send to Brownsvile, Texas to regarrison Ft. Brown as it is a key position in case of an attack by an enemy. Of course, no one knows and there might not be anything to it. I was going out to see Charlie sometime soon but I don't guess I will now. We've been pretty busy here lately. A week ago Friday we had 5 an all day problem and worked hard all day. We got in about 5:00 p.m. and eat supper. After supper we washed harness and carts until dark. Then we had to work a while that night on our own equipment for the full field inspection the next day. on Saturday we took our equipment over to MacArthur field and displayed it. Pitched tents, made picket lines for animals etc. That evening I went on guard and came off Sunday at noon. Monday I was K.P. The 6 rest of the week was regular drill and problems until Thursday when we had another all day problem. It just happened that the K.P. and guard and all day problem came close together. Since we have the new mess K.P.'s come about once a month and guard's every six weeks. I'm regimental runner all next week. I'll stay up at Headquarters and run a few errands. And also prowl around and get the dope on the Army. Well tell Uncle Cad, Grandpa Ray & Pearl Hello., Love Smith S.L. Green Hdqrs. Co. 23rd Inf. Ft. Sam Houston, Texas Mr. W.M.
