S.L. GREEN 2ND TANK CO. FT. SAM HOUSTON TEXAS 1 Fort Sam Houston Texas April 8, 1936 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I got your letter while at Camp Bullis last week. No need to say that I was very glad to hear from you. Tell Grandpa not to worry so much about me. I'll get along fine here. Of course my memory may fail me and I might not write for a while but I'm afraid thats something that cannot be cured. I went to Camp Bullis last Thursday with a 2 a few more to make camp for the unfortunates that had to walk. We pitched tents, set up bunks hauled mattresses and pillows and lockers, put up light lines etc. We had three days of pretty hard work but we didn't have to walk out there with packs like the rest of the company did. We had to sleep under four blankets and an overcoat at nights. In the daytime the mercury goes up to about 95. There is an open air theater out there so I went to the show every night. We were going to start 3 preliminary firing Monday but the wind was too strong. About the middle of the morning I was told to pack my things and get ready to go back to Fort Sam Houston. My transfer had been approved. I don't think I told you I had been trying to get a transfer for over a month. The Captain didn't want me to transfer and did every thing he could to prevent it but the captain of the company I'm in now is a member of the Division Commander's Staff and he 4 pulled a few strings and I was transferred. I'm now a member of the 2nd Tank Company. Our weapons are the Pistol, .30 Caliber Browning Air-cooled machine gun and the one-pounder or 37 millimeter gun. The old tanks are obselete and the new ones haven't been issued yet. So we are a tank company without tanks. Trucks are used to represent tanks. Every tank has a radio in it and thats where I'm supposed to shine. Right now we are busy with the machine guns because we fire for record next month. I like it here find because 5 there's not so much work. We drill for a while wevery morning. then comes a couple of hours of instruction in machine guns. Then an hour of ball playing. (Indoor baseball and volley ball. So far I haven't worked in the afternoons. Another thing I like is that we don't wear wrap leggins. We have lace leggins. I'm sorry to hear that Grandpa has Pleurisy (whatever that is) Make him stay inside in bad weather He should know better. 6 Imogene was working at Wootens when I was there for Christmas. I talked with her for awhile. Tell virgil Derryberry hello for me. Tell him to come down and get in the Army. It is pretty dry here too. It hasn't rained in two or three months. no I didn't see the exercises, exercises at the Alamo. In fact I've never been to see the Alamo yet and the bus goes within a block of it. Tell Uncle Cad hello, also Lurline and Irvin. In fact tell everybody hello. Well I can't think of anything else to write about. Lots of Love Smith S.L. GREEN 2ND TANK COMPANY FT.
