dc.description.transcription1 Fort Sam Houston July 19, 1936 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I was awfully glad to hear from you. And I'm glad you didn't object to my going to the Phillipines. I got a letter from a friend of mine who went to the Philipines and he likes it very much. He says there is no fatigue and no K.P.'s as they hire Filipinos to do them. And his company is only a block from the theater and swimming pool. He said the only thing he didn't like was the lack of white people. Lots 2 of Chinks, Japs and Filipinos and what nots. However, I've changed my mind about going to the Phillipines at present. I have agood chance to go to the West Point Preparatory School here and compete for an appointment to West Point. I'd rather stay here and take a chance on that. I've writte Mr. Massey for my school records. They must be here by August 1. Its not certain that that I can can go to the Prep School yet, and if I go its not certain I'll finish it because a good many wash-out. And if I finish the school its not certain that I'll finish high 3 enough to get an appointment but I think its worth waiting a while for, don't you? Tell Mrs. Robey I think I will be home in September and to have a great big party waiting for me and the more fights the better. They have a few fights here, too. I'm glad John has got a job. I supposed he will go to school this winter. Virginia's address is 1656 Leavenworth St. Apt 11. She has a better job now. She would be glad to hear from you. Grandma Smith and Doris and David still live at 4 2531 Harrison. I hope you still ahve watermelons when I get home. We have watermelons here but they're nothing near as good as they are fresh off the vine. We have just finished 10 days of M.P. Duty. I was a Mounted Patrolman. I kept people from fishing on the reservation, getting things from the dump, hunting, cutting trees, etc. Sure was glad when it was over. Well, I can't think of anything else to say. Tell Uncle Cad Hello for me. Take good care of yourself, both of you. Love- Smith S.L. GREEN 2ND TANK CO FT. SAM HOUSTON TEXAS MR. W.M. GREEN BOX #426 BROKEN BOW, OKLAHOMA
