Fort Sam Houston, Texas May 22, 1937 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I rec'd your letter yesterday and was very glad to hear from you, and to know that both of you are feeling so well. I am feeling pretty good, as usual. We just got back from Camp Bullis on Thursday. We were out there about ten days, firing on the range. There were only about 32 men to fire for record so it didn't take but five or six days. Then it took about four days for combat firing, which we did out of tanks. It certainly is hard to hit a target from a moving tank at a distance of 500 yards. I hit the target 6 times out of a belt of 50 and that was about the third highest in the Co. We also tried out our new .50 caliber machine guns. They shoot a bullet a half inch in diameter and about 1 1/2 inches long and the cartridge case is about 5 or 6 inches long and looks to be 3/4" or 1" in diameter. Their range is around 6 miles. WE have been busy since we got back. Cleaning tanks etc. We are putting on a demonstration next Tuesday the 25th. The Sec. of War is supposed to be there. We demonstrate their speed, action etc. I am the Radio Operator in No. 2 Tanks of the 1st Combat platoon. I owe the gov't $10.00 this month because of a mix-up in the allotment. It was taken out of my pay here for only 11 mo. while it was sent to you for 12. So I have to pay it this mo. I didn't know anything about it until I signed the payroll a few days ago so hadn't made any preparation for it. If you can get along this month without any money let me know. If you need it I can borrow it and cut expenses next month. I never expected to be caught short this way. Write soon and let me know. Well, I must close now. Write soon. Lots of love Smith S.
