Hq. Co., 31st Inf Manila, P.I. September 19, 1940 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I rec'd you letter a few days ago and was very glad to get it, as always. I certainly hope both of you are feeling fine now. I am in good health, as ever; I guess I'm not the kind to get sick. Everything is about as usual over here; I mean the wather. Its always hot, so after thats said, all anyone can do is to keep repeating the same. About the only variations is whether it is raining or not. AT the present we are in the midst of the rainy season, and does it rain! There is hardly a moment when water isn't falling to some degree. Sometimes only a drizzle and sometimes a downpour. I can't say much about the war situation. The general opinion here is that we will see action but don't know when. We have been going out and studying the country of Southern Luzon for defense. In about a week we will take the field again for a short maneuver. Over here we don't expect trouble with Germany, that is, as fas as we are concerned. However, if we don't have a scrap with Japan, that will be a surprise. Anyhow, we all hope for the best. I'm sure you enjoyed the visit of Aunt Lucy, Robert, and Hazel. I imagine Hazel is quite a gal by now I'll bet. I wish I could have been there the Fourth of July. Some other time, I guess. I suppose a lot of the boys around there will get their taste of Army life before long, if the conscription bill is passed. I believe it will. Anyhow they will have something to do besides sit around on the street corners. Its too bad about Frank Massey being paralyzed. I wonder what caused it. A "G" string is a very brief loin cloth and hides very little. It is made of a native cloth. I can probably get one when in Baguio next year. I can't think of a thing to write about at this time so will have to close. Say, hello for me to everyone. Write soon with all the news. Oh yes! The Richardson boy got a bunch of Broken Bow News last month and I read them. Good bye and lots of love, Smith. S. Green Hq. Co. 31st Inf. Manila, P.I. Rec'd Oct. 13 - 1940 Mr. W.M. Green Box 426 Broken Bow, Oklahoma U.S.A.
