Hq. Co., 31st Inf Manila, P.I. October 10, 1940 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I just received your letter a few days ago and was certainly glad to hear from both of you. I hope you all are feeling fine by now and above all, stay that way. As for me, I'm in the best of health, as usual. It's still hot here, but thats nothing unusual. However, it cools off a bit at night because of the rain. Right now I'm sweating as if I was hard at work. Things are getting pretty hot over here besides the weather. There's no use of me telling you about it, thought, because by the time this reaches you, it will be ancient history. We are doing a lot of maneuvering and reconnaissance work, just to be prepared. We also have a Secret War plan worked out. I really don't expect any trouble for some time to come. our potential enemies have enough trouble now. If worst does come to worst, the Philippine Army will be mobilized as soon as possible and that will help. When that time comes, I'm supposed to become an officer in the Philippine Army. What do the boys around there think of the Selective Service Act? I'll be some of them are frantically trying to figure out a way of evading their duty. Some of our mothers pets are so afraid of damaging their precious hides! It would do me a lot of good to be in the States and drill them. I got a big promotion last month. I'm now a technical sergeant, regular Army, and that is equal rank to First Sergeant, except we have different jobs. I have charge of the communications section of the 2nd Bn. 31st Inf. Tell Izola that "G" Strings are very, very, scanty. I'll try to have one for a souvenir. In fact, I'll try to have several souvenirs. Well, I can't think of another thing to write about. Percy Richardson got a promotion too and is getting along fine. Tell all the folks hello for me. only about a year more. (I hope) WRite soon with all the news, foot-ball scores ets. Good bye for this time. All my love, Smith. S. Green Hq. Co. 31st Inf. Manila, P.I. Rec'd Nov-12-Ans. Nov. 30 Mr. W.M. Green Box 426 Broken Bow, Oklahoma U.S.A.
