I suppose you think that I'd forgotten all about you and I can't say as I blame you. The truth is that I haven't written any one since December. I can't seem to think of it when I have time which hasn't been very often lately. It seems funny to hear about the cold weather and flu etc. This is the hottest time of the year over here and will remain this way until June or July when the rains start. We had ten days off for Christmas. Nothing to do much except eat and sleep inthe day time and see the sights at night. Everything was all decorated of course but it didn't seem like Christmas. We had a very nice Christmas dinner but that wasn't unusual because the Army always has 2 a fine dinner on holidays. Jan. 6th. we went on maneuvers and was in Southern Luzon for ten days. It was very hard work. I only got to wash two or three times and got only a few hours sleep each night. We were practicing defense of the islands. February 13th I came out here to Camp O'Donnell with an advance detail to construct combat ranges. I'll have to stay here until March 25th unless something happens. Unless orders are changed, I'll be here about 16 months more or maybe longer. No one can leave now unless they are ready for discharge. The order came from War Dept. just about three days before the last transport sailed. A bunch of boys were all packed up and ready to go. They were having a lot of fun kidding the rest of us about the fun they were going to have when they got to San Francisco. You should have seen their faces drop when the order came through, cancelling all sailings. Most of them raised merry hell, got drunk, went absent etc. I suppose you know that all wives 3 and dependents of Navy personnel have been evacuated. WEll, Army wives and dependents are leaving now as we expect trouble in big batches most any time now. Maybe by the time you read this. Things may quieten down before long, and the order may be changed. However, don't expect me back in December because it will probably be around July of '42 before I make it. I was certainly sorry to hear of the death of Robert McGowen. It was something of a shock. I suppose it always is to learn of the death of a person you have grown up with. I'm glad Broken Bow came out so good with all their games. It seems "Pete" Holt always has a good team. I can't think of a thing to write. Of course I'm in good health as usual. Some people lose lots of weight in the tropics but I'm gaining, if anything. The light isn't so good here in the tent and I don't have time in the daytime to write. This place here is hot as blazes during the day but fairly cool at night. We have a river to bath in, which is a help. 4 Tell all my friends and relatives hello for me. Oh, yes! Virginia is going to have another baby in August. So you will have another great-grandchild. She may have started late but she is getting ahead of Doris now. Dave has graduated from high school and works at night. In the day time he goes to a business school. He stays with Virginia and claude now. Well, I really must close. I hope you both are feeling fine by now. Don't worry about me. I'll be all right. Your loving grandson, Smith. P.S. Write to same address S. Green Hq. Co. 31st Inf Manila, P.I. Mr. W.M.
